The curable and the incurable

525cSocratesThose who are benefited and pay the penalty at the hands of gods and human beings are the ones who have committed curable wrongs; yet the benefit comes to them through pains and agonies, both here and in Hades; for there is no other way to be rid of injustice. But it is from those who have done the utmost injustice and have become incurable through such unjust acts that the examples come; and they themselves no longer profit at all, since they are incurable, but others profit, those who see them suffering, for their wrongs, the greatest, most agonising and most fearful sufferings for all time, simply hung up there in Hades in the prison as examples, a spectacle and a warning to each of the unjust as he arrives.
