How arguments turn to quarrels
SocratesI think, Gorgias, that you too are experienced in many discussions and have observed this sort of thing in them: that people cannot easily define for one another whatever they undertake to converse about, learn from and teach each other, and so end their meetings; but if they disagree about something, and one says the other is not speaking rightly, or not clearly, they get angry and each thinks the other is speaking out of envy of him, competing to win and not inquiring into the question laid before them in the discussion. And some, at any rate, finally part in the most shameful way, after trading abuse and saying and hearing such things about themselves that even those present are vexed on their own account that they ever saw fit to become listeners to people like that.
