A tale without a head
SocratesThis fellow won’t put up with being benefited and undergoing himself the very thing the argument is about—being restrained.
CalliclesNor do I care in the least about anything you say; and it was for Gorgias’ sake that I gave you those answers.
SocratesWell then, what shall we do? Are we breaking off the argument in the middle?
CalliclesYou’ll decide that yourself.
SocratesBut they say it is not permitted to leave even a tale in the middle; one must put a head on it, so that it doesn’t go about without a head. Answer the rest as well, then, so that our argument may get its head.
CalliclesHow overbearing you are, Socrates. But if you listen to me, you will let this argument go, or converse with somebody else.
SocratesThen who else is willing? For let’s not leave the argument unfinished, at any rate.
CalliclesCouldn’t you go through the argument yourself, either speaking on your own or answering yourself?
