Drawing near the youth

254a254bSocratesWhen the charioteer sees the beloved’s gaze and it warms his whole soul through sensation, he is stung by the tingling spurs of desire. The horse that obeys him holds himself back from leaping upon the beloved, restrained by shame now as always. But the other horse has lost all regard for the charioteer’s goad or whip. He leaps and surges forward, giving his partner and driver endless trouble, forcing them to approach the youth and speak to him of the delights of sex. At first the other two resist, outraged at being driven to something dreadful and unlawful. In the end, when the trouble will not stop, they yield, let themselves be led and agree to do what he demands. They come close to the youth and see his face shine.
