Immortality of the soul

245e246aSocratesThus what moves itself is the origin of motion. It can neither be destroyed nor come into being; otherwise all heaven and all earth would collapse together into one, stop, and never again have a source from which they could be set moving and come into being. Now that what moves itself has been shown immortal, no one need be ashamed to call this the very essence and definition of soul. Every body moved from outside is without soul; one moved from within, by itself, has a soul, for this is the nature of soul. If that is so, and what moves itself is nothing other than soul, then soul must necessarily be ungenerated and immortal.
