Terms of Service

The agreement between you and 4xxi Software Ltd., the company behind inaporia: what the service is, what you may and may not do in it, what happens to what you write, and where our responsibility ends.
1.About these Terms
These Terms of Service (“Terms”) govern your use of inaporia, the website at https://inaporia.com (“the Service”), operated by 4xxi Software Ltd., registered in England and Wales (“we”, “us”, “our”).
By using the Service — reading it, creating an account or signing in — you accept these Terms. If you do not agree to them, please do not use the Service.

2.What inaporia is
inaporia is a way of reading Plato's dialogues in short sessions. A session stops at a “fork”: you answer with one tap and a sentence of your own (on most forks the tap alone is enough), and then see what Socrates actually did, a short comment on your answer (a “mirror”) and how other readers answered.
Around the reading there are also:
- The Agora — other readers' public answers at the forks you have already answered.
- The margin — marks, comments and questions that readers leave on a phrase of the text, with answers to the questions.
- Jurors — people you read a book with, at your invitation or theirs; their answers appear at each fork once you have given your own.
- Cards — a picture of one of your answers or of your path through the book, with a link you can send to anyone.
Anyone may read the texts without an account. Answering at forks, writing in the margin, the Agora, jurors and settings kept with your account need an account. The Service is free: there is nothing to buy in it and no advertising.
3.Accounts
You can create an account with an email address and a password or, where the option is offered, with a Google account. If you sign up with an email address, you confirm it with a one-time code we send to it, and the account cannot be used until you do. You can reset a forgotten password with a code sent to your email.
The Service is intended for people aged 18 and over. By creating an account, you confirm that you are at least 18 years old. We do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18.
You must provide accurate information, keep to one account per person and not let anyone else use your account. You are responsible for keeping your sign-in details secure. If you believe someone else has accessed your account, tell us promptly at [email protected].
4.Your content
Your content means what you write and choose in the Service: your answers at forks (the tap and any words you add), your private notes, your marks, comments and questions in the margin, and your name in the Agora.
Your content remains yours. You grant us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, reproduce, process and display it, for as long as it remains in the Service and solely to operate the Service as these Terms describe: to show it to you; to show it to others where section 5 says it is visible to them; to prepare mirrors, to place written answers in a line of argument and to answer your questions in the margin, which involves sending the relevant text to AI providers (section 9); to screen it under section 8; and to include it in aggregate statistics, such as the share of readers who chose each line of argument at a fork.
We do not sell your content or use it for advertising. You confirm that you have the right to post what you post and that it does not break the law or these Terms.
5.What is public and what is private
- Private notes are for you alone. No other reader sees them, your jurors included; they never appear in the Agora, in the margin or on a card, and they are never sent to an AI model.
- Your answers at forks stay out of the Agora unless you choose otherwise. The “Public answers” setting is off until you turn it on, at the start or later in Settings. While it is on, an answer with words in it is shown to other readers who have answered the same fork — in the Agora and beside the fork, with your name in the Agora and the line of argument you chose with your tap — after screening where screening is in use; an answer given with a tap alone is never public. The setting applies to answers written after you change it; in Settings you can also take all your earlier answers out of the Agora, or make them public, at once.
- Your jurors see your answers at the forks of the book you read together once they have answered those forks themselves: the line of argument you chose with your tap and your words, whether or not your answers are public, and even if screening has kept them out of the Agora. They also see whether you have reached or skipped each fork, and how much of that book you have read.
- Marks, comments and questions in the margin are always public. Once processed, a mark or a question — with your words and the answer to the question — appears beside its paragraph under your name for everyone reading that text, including visitors without an account, and those pages are open to search engines and other crawlers.
- A card is made only when you ask for it. A card of an answer shows part of your answer, Socrates' move, the place in the book and the share of readers who took the same line; a card of your path shows your progress through the book, how many forks you have answered, how your moves compare with Socrates' and your current run of reading days. Neither shows your name. A card is drawn from your data as it stands when it is opened, so a card of your path goes on showing your progress. Anyone with the link can open a card, even if the answer on it is not public in the Agora, and at present a card's link cannot be switched off once it has been made.
- Your name in the Agora is shown with your public answers and margin marks, to your jurors, and in the invitations you send, including to anyone who has an invitation's link. It starts as the first word of the name on your account when the account was created, and you can change it in Settings. If there is no such name, the full name on your account may be shown in some places instead.
Public answers and margin marks are there to be read by others. The Service shows a public answer only to readers who have answered the same fork, but do not count on that to keep it from anyone else: treat anything you make public as something anyone may read, copy or quote, and do not put into it information about yourself or anyone else that you would not want to make public.
You can edit your answers, and edit or delete your margin marks, questions included. Answers cannot yet be deleted within the Service; to have them deleted, write to [email protected].
6.Jurors and invitations
You can invite someone to read a book with you as your juror: by email, with a link you hand over yourself, or from the Agora, by inviting the author of an answer you have read there. When you invite by email or from the Agora, we send the person an email carrying your name in the Agora, the title of the book and a link. Anyone who has the link to an invitation can see your name in the Agora and the book on it.
Invite by address only people who know you and would expect such a message from you, and do not use invitations to advertise, to pester anyone or to write to people who have made it clear they do not want to hear from you. A link you hand over yourself can be accepted once by anyone who has it, so give it only to the person you mean it for.
An invitation lasts 14 days and can be declined or simply left unanswered. Once it is accepted, the two of you are paired for that book, and each of you sees the other's answers and progress as described in section 5. At present a pairing cannot be ended within the Service; if you want one ended, write to [email protected].
7.Acceptable use
When using the Service, you agree not to:
- use the Service for any unlawful purpose, or post content that is unlawful, defamatory, obscene or hateful, or that infringes anyone else's rights, including copyright and privacy;
- harass, threaten or insult other readers or anyone else, or impersonate another person;
- post spam, advertising or promotional links, or use invitations to send spam or to write to people who do not want to hear from you;
- publish other people's personal information without their permission;
- include in answers, notes, margin marks or your display name sensitive facts about yourself or anyone else — health, religious or political affiliation, ethnic origin, sex life or sexual orientation. A fork asks for your view of an argument in the text, not for facts about your life;
- try to manipulate the AI models the Service uses — for example by hiding instructions for the model in an answer or a question (prompt injection) — to make them produce harmful or off-topic output, reveal their instructions or get around their safety measures;
- use bots, scrapers or other automated means to access the Service or collect content from it, except as our robots.txt file (https://inaporia.com/robots.txt) allows;
- test the security of the Service, scan it, or try to get around its limits or access controls, without our written permission — if you find a vulnerability, please report it to [email protected];
- interfere with the operation of the Service or place an unreasonable load on it, create accounts in bulk or by automated means, or use someone else's account.
If you break these rules, we may remove the content concerned, warn you, or suspend or close your account, depending on how serious the breach is.
8.Moderation and removal of content
We do not check all content before it appears, and we are not obliged to. We may, however, review, hide, remove or decline to publish any content that we reasonably believe breaks these Terms or the law, or may harm other readers or the Service.
Public answers, margin marks and questions, and the answers an AI model writes to margin questions, may be screened automatically by an AI model before other readers see them. Automated screening makes mistakes in both directions: it can let through what it should have stopped and stop what is harmless, and when the screening model cannot be reached, content goes through unscreened. What screening stops is not shown in the Agora, beside a fork or in the margin and cannot be made into a card; screening does not hide an answer from your jurors (section 5).
If you see content that you believe breaks these Terms, write to [email protected] with the address of the page and the words concerned, and we will review it.
9.AI-generated content
Some of what you see in the Service is produced by AI models from third-party providers. Which providers we use, and what we send them, is set out in our Privacy Policy. In particular:
- the mirror — the short comment you see after answering at a fork — is either a text our editors wrote in advance for your line of argument, or text generated by an AI model from your answer;
- answers to questions in the margin are generated by an AI model once and are then shown to everyone reading that passage;
- on some forks, an AI model decides which line of argument a written answer belongs to;
- content may be screened by an AI model, as described in section 8.
For this, the model is sent the words of your answer, or of your margin mark or question, with the context it needs from the book and the fork. Your name, email address and private notes are not sent. We do not use your content to train AI models.
AI-generated text can be wrong or incomplete, can misread your answer or the passage, and may differ if the same thing is asked again. A mirror is not a grade. None of it is an authoritative interpretation of Plato, or academic, professional, psychological or any other advice, and you should not rely on it when making decisions.
If you dictate an answer, the speech is recognised by your browser, which may send the audio to its maker's speech-recognition service; we receive only the text you then submit. You can switch voice input off in Settings.
10.The texts and intellectual property
The dialogues of Plato appear in translations that are in the public domain, and the Service names the translator of each. We claim no rights in those translations.
Everything else in the Service — the division of the texts into sessions, the forks and their questions, the lines of argument, the mirrors, notes and glossary written by our editors, the design, the software and the instructions given to the AI models — belongs to 4xxi Software Ltd. or its licensors and is protected by copyright under UK law.
You may share the cards you make, link to any page of the Service and quote from it as the law allows. Otherwise, you may not copy, reverse-engineer or commercially exploit the Service or its content without our prior written permission.
11.Termination and availability
You may stop using the Service at any time. An account cannot yet be deleted within the Service: to have your account and the content linked to it deleted, write to [email protected] from the email address you sign in with. Beforehand, you can download a copy of your data in Settings.
When we delete your account, we delete with it your answers, notes, margin marks and questions (with the answers to them), reactions, reading progress, juror pairings and the invitations you have sent, and the links to your cards stop working. Aggregate statistics that do not identify you may remain.
We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms. Except in the case of a serious breach, we will give you reasonable notice first. If we close your account other than for a serious breach by you, or discontinue the Service entirely, we will give at least 30 days' notice where practical and let you export your data.
We may change, add or remove features of the Service. We do not guarantee that it will be available without interruption: we may carry out maintenance, and we are not liable for interruptions caused by events outside our reasonable control, including failures of our hosting, email or AI providers.
12.Disclaimer of warranties
The Service and its content are provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis. To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, we disclaim all warranties, express or implied, including implied warranties of satisfactory quality, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights as a consumer.
We do not warrant that:
- the Service will be available without interruption or free of errors;
- AI-generated content, statistics or other readers' answers will be accurate, complete or appropriate;
- any errors or defects will be corrected;
- the Service is suitable for any particular purpose, including study, teaching or research.
Other readers' answers and margin marks express their own views, not ours. We are not responsible for them, although we act on reports about them as described in section 8.
13.Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by the laws of England and Wales, 4xxi Software Ltd., its directors, employees and contributors shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, the Service, including any damages arising from reliance on AI-generated content or on content posted by other readers.
The Service is free. Our total aggregate liability to you for all claims arising out of or in connection with the Service shall not exceed ten pounds sterling (£10).
Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for any other liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law.
14.Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms from time to time. The new version will be posted on this page with the date from which it applies. If you continue to use the Service after that date, you accept the updated Terms.
15.Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising under these Terms shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
If you use the Service as a consumer, this does not deprive you of the protection of the mandatory rules of the law of the country where you live, or of any right that law gives you to bring proceedings in its courts.
